Starting January 1, cat owners in Taiwan must microchip their pets or face significant fines. The new rule brings cats under the same strict regulation as dogs.
The island's Agriculture Ministry announced the policy. Owners who fail to implant the tiny identification chips in their cats could be fined up to 15,000 New Taiwan Dollars (about $477).
A microchip is a small electronic device placed under an animal's skin. It stores a unique ID number, helping authorities return lost pets to their owners.
The ministry says the measure aims to promote responsible pet care and improve animal management. It follows years of mandatory microchipping for all dogs in Taiwan.
