A shopping mall in China has installed men's bathroom doors that turn from opaque to fully transparent if someone smokes inside. The unusual measure aims to shame smokers into quitting the habit in restrooms.
The special glass doors, installed at two jewelry malls in Shenzhen, use a smart film technology. Normally, the glass is frosted for privacy. However, sensors detect cigarette smoke and trigger the glass to become clear within seconds, exposing the smoker to public view.
Images and videos of the doors spread widely on Chinese social media, where many users praised the innovative tactic. The malls have not commented on how long the transparent effect lasts or if it applies to other violations.
Public smoking in indoor spaces is banned across China, but enforcement can be inconsistent. The transparent doors represent a new, social pressure-based approach to upholding the rules.
