Honduran electoral authorities declared Nasry Asfura the winner of the presidential election on Wednesday. The result confirms a shift to the right in Latin American politics.
The conservative candidate, backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, received 40.27 percent of the vote. The announcement ended a weeks-long vote count that tested public trust in the electoral system.
The victory continues a regional trend. It follows the election of far-right politician Jose Antonio Kast in Chile just one week earlier.
Asfura is a member of Honduras's long-dominant National Party. His main rival, Xiomara Castro, had hoped to become the country's first female president.
