Congresswoman Sues to Remove Trump's Name from Kennedy Center
A U.S. congresswoman has filed a lawsuit to strip former President Donald Trump's name from a major arts venue. She argues the naming was illegal. Representative Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) is suing the U.S. Department of the Interior and others. The suit targets the 2020 decision to rename Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center as the "John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Donald J. Trump Pavilion." Beatty claims the renaming broke the law. She states that changing the name of the federally owned building requires "an act of Congress." No such law was passed. The lawsuit follows a 2022 board meeting. Beatty, a board member, says she was muted when she tried to oppose the naming during a vote. The legal action seeks a court order to remove Trump's name from the center. It also aims to prevent any similar name changes without congressional approval.
