A new film titled *Anaconda* is not a straight remake of the 1997 creature feature. Instead, it is a self-referential comedy about two friends trying to remake that very movie.
The film stars Jack Black as Doug, a frustrated wedding videographer, and Paul Rudd as Griff, a struggling actor. Reuniting for Doug's birthday, Griff reveals he has acquired the remake rights to *Anaconda*, the movie they loved as teens. He proposes they film their own low-budget version together.
Despite initial doubts, Doug agrees. They recruit friends, played by Steve Zahn and Thandiwe Newton, and travel to the Amazon to shoot. There, they meet an odd snake handler and a mysterious boat captain.
The comedy works best when it embraces pure silliness. Early attempts at horror or emotional depth fall flat. The movie finds its strength when letting its two charismatic leads be funny.
