UK Aid Slashed to £1bn? Critics Warn of Global "Irrelevance"

A new plan to drastically cut Britain's foreign aid would cripple its international influence, campaigners and political opponents warn. The Reform UK party proposes capping the annual overseas aid budget at £1 billion. This is roughly 0.03% of the UK's total economic output (GDP). Critics state this 90% cut would not even cover existing British commitments to major global bodies like the United Nations and the World Bank. They argue failing to meet these obligations would damage the UK's standing and risk its role within these organizations. The current government, led by Keir Starmer, has its own plan to reduce aid spending from 0.5% to 0.3% of GDP by 2027. Even that lower percentage would amount to approximately £9 billion per year—nine times higher than Reform's proposed cap.
