A new investigation has documented at least 119 direct attacks on hospitals and delivery wards in recent global conflicts. These attacks have made childbirth a target in war zones.
In one incident, 30 women were sheltering in a maternity hospital in El Fasher, Sudan. Some had just delivered their babies. Others were still in labor when attackers struck.
A lab technician working that night, Abdo-Rabo Ahmed, survived. He described hearing the screams of women and children. "They were killing everybody inside the hospital," he said. "Those of us who were able to run, did."
The report covers conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan. It highlights how healthcare for pregnant women is being destroyed.
