Russia has pledged "full support" to Venezuela in opposing what it calls U.S. "hostilities" in the region.
The statement follows a series of U.S. military strikes. Since September, U.S. forces have targeted boats they say were trafficking illegal drugs in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean. The U.S. has not publicly provided evidence for these operations.
More than 100 people have been killed in the strikes.
Venezuela's government, a long-time Russian ally, condemns the U.S. actions as a violation of its sovereignty. Russia's promise of support signals a further hardening of geopolitical tensions in the Americas.
