Peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine remain at a standstill. The two sides hold completely opposing views on the most critical issues.
A major point of disagreement is territory. Ukraine insists on restoring its full borders, including all land occupied since 2014. Russia currently controls large regions of Ukraine and demands Kyiv accept this as a permanent fact.
The second major block is security. Ukraine seeks legally binding guarantees from Western nations to prevent future attacks. Russia strongly opposes any expansion of what it calls "hostile military alliances" near its border, meaning Ukraine's potential membership in NATO.
Without compromise on these fundamental points, diplomats report no clear path toward a ceasefire.
