ASEAN Steps In as Thai-Cambodian Border Tensions Flare
A regional bloc has called for calm after renewed military tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued a statement urging both nations to exercise restraint. The appeal follows reports of increased troop movements and a recent exchange of gunfire along their shared border. In response, military officials from Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an emergency meeting. The talks will take place on December 24 under the existing General Border Committee framework. This committee is a formal dialogue channel designed to prevent and resolve border disputes between the two countries. The border near the ancient Preah Vihear temple has been a repeated source of conflict. While the temple itself belongs to Cambodia, the surrounding territory is contested. The upcoming meeting is seen as a critical step to de-escalate the situation and prevent further clashes.
