Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has called the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) a "special" tournament, suggesting it holds greater personal significance for him than the FIFA World Cup.
The 27-year-old will represent Nigeria, the country of his birth, in the competition starting January 13. AFCON is Africa's premier football event, featuring 24 national teams.
"For me, it's more important [than the World Cup]," Iwobi stated. "It's an opportunity to make my family and the nation proud."
His comments highlight the unique cultural and emotional weight the tournament carries across the continent. Players often describe representing their African homeland as a peak career honor.
Nigeria, a three-time champion, is considered one of the favorites to win the title in Ivory Coast.
