More than 107,000 people have fled Sudan’s El-Fasher city in just three weeks. The United Nations migration agency, the IOM, reported the mass displacement on Tuesday.
The people are escaping intense fighting in North Darfur’s capital. Armed clashes between military factions have sharply increased. This has worsened the security situation in a region already suffering from long-term instability.
Most of those displaced have moved to nearby villages. However, these areas lack basic services and have limited capacity to help. The IOM warns that humanitarian conditions are critical.
The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has created one of the world’s worst displacement crises. The battle for control of El-Fasher is a major focus of the ongoing war.
