Alex Murdaugh's defense team says it is "cautiously optimistic" he will get a new murder trial. This comes as South Carolina's Supreme Court prepares to hear appeals in February.
The appeal focuses on alleged misconduct by the court clerk at Murdaugh's original trial. Murdaugh's lawyers claim the clerk improperly influenced the jury. They argue this violated his right to a fair trial.
Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 for the murders of his wife and son. He is serving two life sentences.
The Supreme Court will now decide if the clerk's actions were serious enough to require a new trial. A hearing is scheduled for February.
