The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a dual warning on global health crises this week, stating that progress against famine in Gaza remains unstable while also addressing a separate conflict in Sudan.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the situation in Gaza is "extremely fragile." Recent increases in food aid have not yet ended the risk of widespread starvation, he explained.
In a separate statement, Tedros said he is "encouraged" by the release of several Sudanese health workers. They had been detained in the South Darfur region. The WHO did not provide details on their captivity.
The two announcements highlight severe health emergencies in different conflict zones. The WHO continues to call for sustained humanitarian access and the protection of healthcare workers in both regions.
