The conviction of British citizen and publisher Jimmy Lai in Hong Kong presents a major challenge for the UK government. China's actions are forcing Prime Minister Keir Starmer into a difficult position.
A Hong Kong court found Lai guilty last week of national security crimes. The charges accused him of trying to "destabilise" China's ruling Communist Party. Lai was a prominent figure in Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned the trial. She called it "politically motivated" and protested to China's ambassador. The UK had campaigned for Lai's release.
However, China shows no sign of changing its position. The conviction is seen as part of a broader pattern. Beijing has been accused of breaking its promise to protect Hong Kong's freedoms after the city returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
The UK government must now decide how to respond. Analysts say the case is a direct test of Britain's foreign policy under its new leadership.
