A US election may have been decided by foreign policy for the first time in decades. Donald Trump's war in Iran and international tariffs are seen as key drivers of the inflation that pushed many Americans to vote against his party on Tuesday — a result described as a "generational wipeout" for Republicans.
Democrats now control Congress and plan to push back hard on the president's foreign policy. They are threatening investigations into some of his top envoys and Pentagon contractors, budget fights over the Iran war, and greater scrutiny of US ties with allies such as Israel.
But Trump still holds veto power. He can use it to push through his policies on tariffs, the war in Iran, and aid for Ukraine.
