Indonesia's Forest Fires Linked to 401,586 Respiratory Cases
Indonesia's Ministry of Health has recorded 401,586 cumulative cases of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) across seven regions, according to data released on Sunday. The cases are linked to forest and land fires burning across the country. ARI, known locally as ISPA, refers to infections of the breathing passages, including the nose, throat, and lungs. Symptoms range from mild colds to severe breathing difficulty. The ministry reported the figure as a cumulative total, meaning it counts all cases recorded during the ongoing fire season rather than current active cases. The seven affected regions were not named in the initial report. Forest and land fires are an annual problem in Indonesia, often started to clear land for farming. The resulting smoke, known as haze, spreads across large areas and poses health risks, especially to children and the elderly.
