Hakan Şimşek of the Republican People's Party (CHP) has been elected mayor of Şehzadeler district in Manisa, Turkey. He won a vote in the municipal council following the death of the previous mayor, Gülşah Durbay.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its ally, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), chose not to field a candidate for the position. This decision cleared the path for the CHP candidate's victory.
Şimşek, previously a CHP council member, faced only one opponent. Another council member from his own party ran as an independent but did not secure enough votes.
The election fills a key local leadership role left vacant by the late mayor. Şimşek now assumes control of the district's administration.
