Indonesia's Youth Pledge Must Become Action, Not Just Memory
Indonesia's Culture Minister Fadli Zon has called on the country's young people to carry the spirit of the Youth Pledge beyond ceremony and into everyday action. Speaking on Wednesday, Zon said the historic 1928 oath should serve as a living guide for the next generation, not merely a date on the national calendar. The Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) is a 1928 declaration in which young nationalists from across the archipelago vowed to uphold one homeland, one nation, and one unifying language. Indonesia marks it every October 28. Zon urged youth to channel that unity into concrete contributions — through education, community work, and civic participation. He stressed that the pledge's true value lies in what young people do, not what they remember.
