Syrian authorities have arrested the leader of an antiquities theft ring. The group is accused of stealing artifacts from the National Museum in Damascus.
The country's Ministry of Culture announced the arrest on December 19. The suspect is described as the network's "ringleader."
The theft occurred last month in the museum's Classics Hall. A joint investigation with the Interior Ministry led to the arrest. Officials say recovered surveillance footage was key to identifying the suspect.
The Ministry of Culture confirmed the operation but did not name the arrested individual. It also did not specify which artifacts were stolen or if they have been recovered.
