A major artificial intelligence company is asking investors to bet on its future — while admitting the technology it builds could either save humanity or destroy it.
Anthropic, a leading AI developer, is moving toward a public stock offering (IPO, or initial public offering — when a private company first sells shares to the public). The company has publicly stated that its work carries enormous stakes: its AI systems could bring great benefits to society, or cause catastrophic harm.
That message puts investors in an unusual position. They are being asked to weigh huge potential rewards against equally huge risks, based largely on the company's own warnings.
Anthropic has built its reputation on AI safety research, positioning itself as a careful developer in a fast-moving industry. Now it must convince public markets that caution and growth can coexist.
The IPO would test whether investors are willing to fund a company that openly questions the consequences of its own products.
