A new United Nations report says the world can no longer limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) found that even the most ambitious emissions-reduction scenarios cannot achieve this target.
The report's lowest-warming scenario would require steep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. Even then, it would only cap peak global warming at 1.7 degrees Celsius.
