The world will likely exceed the 1.5°C global warming limit set by the Paris Agreement, according to a new UN report. Even in the best-case scenario, temperatures will overshoot to 1.8°C. This means the world will temporarily pass the 1.5°C threshold before bringing temperatures back down.
To achieve this, the report says, countries must remove massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon removal refers to technologies and methods that pull CO2 out of the air and store it. The report presents this overshoot path as the most optimistic outcome still available.
