Pope Francis has chosen a new leader for the Catholic Church in New York. He is Bishop Ronald Hicks of Chicago.
Hicks, 58, will replace Cardinal Timothy Dolan. He will become the official head of the Archdiocese of New York. This role includes responsibility for an estimated 2.5 million Catholics.
The appointment is unexpected. New York's archbishop is traditionally a cardinal and a prominent figure in the U.S. church. Hicks is not a cardinal, and his background is in Chicago.
He now faces the task of leading one of the most visible Catholic communities in the United States.
