Elon Musk says merging SpaceX and Tesla would be a “good idea.” The comment from the billionaire, who leads both public companies, raises the prospect of combining his rocket and electric-car businesses.
Musk made the remark as he discussed the rapid advance of artificial intelligence. He warned that the world is approaching a so-called “singularity”—a theoretical point when AI becomes more capable than humans and change becomes uncontrollable.
The boards of SpaceX and Tesla are reportedly exploring a potential merger. Neither company has confirmed any formal plan.
Musk has not given a timeline or details on how a combined company would be structured. Any merger of two publicly traded firms would require board and shareholder approval.
