A father has told the BBC that a stranger saved his baby’s life during a violent attack at a Sydney shopping mall. The rescuer was forced into an impossible decision.
The incident occurred last Saturday at the Westfield Bondi Junction mall. A man stabbed multiple people, killing six. The attacker was later shot dead by police.
Among the victims were a young couple, Ash Good and her partner. They were shopping with their nine-month-old daughter when the attack began. Ms. Good, 38, was stabbed. As she was dying, she thrust her injured baby toward two strangers.
One of those strangers, a woman, took the child and ran. The baby had also been stabbed. The father, who was not present during the attack, said this stranger’s quick action directly saved his daughter’s life.
“I owe the life of my child to the lady who held her when she was dying,” he said.
The infant underwent emergency surgery and is now in stable condition. The heroic stranger has not been publicly identified.
The attack has shocked Australia. The other victims included five women and one man. A security guard who helped evacuate people also died.
