Federal prosecutors announced major developments Thursday in what they call a massive Minnesota fraud case. They warned the total scale may exceed $9 billion.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson revealed five new criminal charges. He stated the "magnitude of this fraud cannot be overstated."
The scandal involves the Feeding Our Future nonprofit. Authorities allege it created fake sites to steal federal child nutrition funds.
Prosecutors say the scheme exploited programs meant to feed children. Instead, they claim, participants bought luxury items like property and cars.
The new charges bring the total to 70 people accused. So far, prosecutors have seized over $50 million in assets.
