Zimbabwe lithium mine opens, India's Lohum eyes EV battery boom

📡 Nikkei Asia · 1 min read ·
Lohum has opened a lithium mine in Zimbabwe. The Indian company now plans to move into electric vehicle (EV) battery production. Lithium is a key metal used to make EV batteries. Zimbabwe holds some of Africa's largest lithium reserves. The move gives Lohum direct access to raw lithium. This could lower costs and secure supply as global demand for EVs rises. Lohum is an Indian battery recycling and materials company. It has not said how much it will invest in EV battery manufacturing or when production will start. The company joins a growing list of firms racing to secure lithium supplies. Automakers worldwide need more batteries as they shift from gasoline cars to electric models.
