The M23 rebel group has begun pulling its fighters out of Goma, a strategic city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to statements from the group's leaders.
This withdrawal follows intense international pressure. However, the Congolese government has dismissed the move as a "distraction."
A government spokesman accused the rebels of trying to mislead a United States mediation team that is currently in the region. The team is attempting to broker a peace deal to end the long-running conflict.
The city of Goma, located on the border with Rwanda, is a major economic and political hub. The M23 group captured it late last year, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis.
The planned rebel withdrawal is being monitored by an East African regional military force.
