Many people are growing tired of their online experiences. Common complaints include low-quality "AI slop" filling news feeds, the declining quality of platforms (called "enshittification"), and overwhelming "advice pollution." Others are exhausted by polarising content.
This frustration may be leading to a real change in behavior. One study shows a notable shift: time spent on social media peaked in 2022 and has been declining since. This analysis was done for the Financial Times by the research company GWI.
