Britain has been left without an ice patrol ship after HMS Protector suffered engine problems on Tuesday and had to be towed back to Plymouth, according to media reports.
The breakdown could speed up the Royal Navy's assessment of whether the vessel needs to be replaced. The ship was originally built in Norway and has spent 25 years in rough seas at both poles.
