Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has promised to veto a bill that would reduce the prison sentence of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro was sentenced to more than 27 years for leading an attempted coup to overturn the 2022 election results. Investigations found the plot included a plan to assassinate Lula.
The bill to cut Bolsonaro's term passed Brazil's congress on Wednesday. The legislature is largely conservative and could override Lula's veto.
Lula publicly acknowledged on Thursday that his veto may not stand. The political battle over the former president's sentence continues.
