Africa's growth is funded abroad? That must change.

Africa cannot rely on foreign aid and outside investors to fund its growth, according to Wasim Tahir, a senior advisor at ODI Global and former director at British International Investment. In an interview for the RootsToFoods Capital Series, Tahir explained how development finance works. He described how it moves private money into emerging markets. But he said the real solution is closer to home. Africa needs deep domestic capital markets, he argued. These are local systems where governments and companies raise money by selling bonds and shares to local investors. He also pointed to national development banks. These are government-backed banks that fund projects inside their own countries. Tahir's message: lasting growth will come when Africa finances itself.
