China Steps In as Thailand, Cambodia Clash
China has sent a special envoy to mediate between Thailand and Cambodia after renewed border fighting. The two Southeast Asian neighbors exchanged heavy fire on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in a long-running territorial dispute. Beijing announced the diplomatic mission on Wednesday. "As a close neighbour and friend of Cambodia and Thailand, China closely follows the ongoing border conflict," China's Foreign Ministry stated. It said China is actively working "to promote peace" between the two sides. The special envoy will shuttle between the capitals, Bangkok and Phnom Penh. China's move highlights its role as a major power in the region seeking to stabilize tensions. The conflict centers on a disputed area surrounding an ancient temple.
