A new art exhibition has opened in the heart of Homs, Syria, symbolizing hope and recovery for the war-scarred city. Artist Mai al-Halwani's showcase, titled "Arteries with Wings," is now on display.
The exhibition features a collection of paintings and sculptures. Al-Halwani uses her work to explore themes of resilience and healing. She describes the pieces as channels for life and hope, much like arteries in the human body, but given wings to soar.
For over a decade, Homs was a major battleground in the Syrian conflict. The city suffered widespread destruction. Cultural life was largely silenced.
This exhibition, held in a restored building, is a significant step. It marks the gradual return of public artistic expression to the city. Locals and visitors now have a space to engage with contemporary art.
"Creating art here now is an act of defiance against despair," al-Halwani said. "These works are the arteries pumping color and life back into our city."
The opening attracted artists, civil society members, and international cultural observers. Many see it as a barometer for Homs's ongoing reconstruction, which includes rebuilding its social fabric.
"Arteries with Wings" will remain open to the public for one month. Organizers plan further cultural events in the same venue.
