The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced a sudden energy agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The deal aims to lower fuel prices in the U.S. and globally just before the upcoming elections.
"I have just concluded a very satisfactory meeting with President Vladimir Putin," Trump wrote on Truth Social. He stated that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 tons of diesel to the U.S. and world markets. An additional 500,000 tons will arrive in November, followed by 1,000,000 tons shortly after.
Trump added that Russia will deliver 3,000,000 tons of diesel in the near future, depending on the status of its refineries.
"Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz and this great announcement on Russian energy, diesel prices for Americans and, in fact, the entire world, will FALL AT A RECORD AND RAPID PACE!" Trump concluded.
This agreement marks a sharp reversal. It follows the U.S. blockade on Russian crude oil imposed after the invasion of Ukraine. It also comes shortly after September 18, when Trump signed a round of sanctions against Russia. Those sanctions targeted Russian officials, banks, and a shadow fleet of oil tankers. They also banned new U.S. investment in Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski criticized the deal. He called it "unfair" and "unworthy of an ally."
"At the same moment our team was talking with the American team in Florida, the U.S. president was having a conversation with the leader of the Kremlin, the leader of this war, the leader of this aggression," Zelenski said. He noted that the money Putin earns from selling this diesel to the U.S. will finance the war in Ukraine.
