The Oscars are leaving traditional television. Starting in 2029, the Academy Awards ceremony will be streamed live on YouTube.
This ends a more than 50-year broadcast partnership with the ABC network. The move is the latest major shift in how Hollywood's biggest events reach audiences.
The change highlights the growing power of streaming platforms. YouTube, owned by Google, is a global video giant with over 2 billion monthly users.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organizes the Oscars, has not yet released details about the new streaming format. The agreement with YouTube is for five years, covering the 2029 through 2033 ceremonies. ABC will continue to broadcast the show until the current contract ends after the 2028 event.
