President Bola Tinubu has replaced the heads of two major Nigerian petroleum agencies. The move includes the immediate removal of Farouk Ahmed, chief executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
Ahmed's dismissal follows public corruption allegations from Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote. Dangote owns the continent's largest oil refinery.
The president's office announced the changes without giving a specific reason. It named new leaders for the NMDPRA and its upstream counterpart, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.
Industry experts see this as a significant move to restore confidence in Nigeria's vital energy sector. The government has stated a commitment to reforming national oil and gas institutions.
