Christine Choy, a groundbreaking documentary filmmaker, has died at age 76. Her work focused on Asian American life and social justice.
Her most famous film, "Who Killed Vincent Chin?", was nominated for an Academy Award in 1988. The documentary examines the 1982 murder of a Chinese American man in Detroit and the subsequent legal case. For its historical importance, the film was later added to the U.S. National Film Registry.
Choy co-directed the film with Renee Tajima-Peña. Their work is considered essential for understanding Asian American identity and the fight for civil rights.
Throughout her career, Choy made over 80 films. She was also a respected professor at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
