Hong Kong Schools Face Hurdles in New Foreign Student Plan

A top Hong Kong school has warned that housing and scholarships are major challenges for a new government plan. The plan allows certain schools to admit foreign students for the first time. Chan Wai-kai, principal of HKBUAS Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School, said the sector supports the move. His school is part of the Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS), a group of semi-private schools. But he said practical issues must be solved. "Accommodation arrangements and scholarships have to be addressed when admitting non-local students," Chan stated. The government's trial scheme will start in the coming academic year. It aims to attract foreign students to DSS schools. These schools receive public funding but operate independently. The success of the plan now depends on solving these key logistical problems.
