Taiwan's biggest chipmakers are sharply increasing spending in the United States and Southeast Asia, betting on rising global demand for artificial intelligence.
TSMC, the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, is leading the push. The company is expanding production capacity abroad to serve AI customers closer to their markets and to reduce risks from geopolitical tensions.
Other Taiwanese technology companies are joining the move. These firms supply servers, networking equipment, and other hardware needed to run AI systems. Many are building or expanding factories in Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
The shift marks a major change for an industry long centered in Taiwan. Companies say the new spending will create jobs and strengthen supply chains in their host countries.
Analysts expect the trend to continue as AI investment grows worldwide.
