Former U.S. special counsel Jack Smith defended his closed investigations into Donald Trump in a private congressional hearing Wednesday.
Smith told the House Judiciary Committee that the basis for the now-dropped criminal cases "rests entirely with President Trump and his actions."
The Republican-led committee called Smith to testify. For months, Republican lawmakers have sought to discredit the investigations. They argue the cases were an abuse of the legal system, a claim Trump has repeatedly made.
The hearing followed recent disclosures from Trump appointees within the Justice Department.
