Science journal, Volume 394, Issue 6819, October 2026, page 5. Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in scientific research. It helps analyze data, generate hypotheses, and speed up discovery. But AI-augmented science must remain contestable. That means its methods, data, and conclusions must stay open to question, testing, and challenge by other researchers. If AI-driven results cannot be checked or disputed, trust in science weakens. Keeping AI-augmented science contestable protects the reliability of research.
