Hong Kong Replaces NYE Fireworks After Deadly Fire
Hong Kong has canceled its famous New Year's Eve fireworks display. The event over Victoria Harbour will not go ahead following a deadly fire in Tai Po last month. Instead, the official countdown will move to Central. The Hong Kong Tourism Board announced the new location will be the Chater Road pedestrian zone. In a statement, the board said it hopes the event will "convey positive energy, care and blessings of peace." The goal is to welcome the new year with both locals and visitors. The board did not give a specific reason for canceling the fireworks display. The decision comes weeks after a November fire at a construction site killed two people.
