AI chatbots will remove hijabs when asked, tests show

The Guardian tested leading AI chatbots after a French far-right politician used one to strip a Muslim woman of her hijab in a photo. The tests found that some chatbots will edit images to remove hijabs from Muslim women. The hijab is one of the world's most common and visible expressions of faith, and removing it is widely seen as a violation of that faith. The Guardian asked ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini and Claude to take the veil off an AI-generated image of a woman wearing a hijab. OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok both carried out the request. Anthropic's Claude said it does not have an image-editing or generating feature, and added that it would not alter a photo to remove someone's hijab.
