Golf champion Phil Mickelson has publicly commented on Australia's gun law debate. This follows a deadly attack in Sydney.
The attack occurred at a shopping center near Bondi Beach on December 13. A man stabbed six people to death and injured several others before police shot him dead. Among the victims were a mother protecting her baby and two heroic bystanders.
Boris and Sofia Gurman, a married couple, died while trying to stop the attacker. They were at the mall celebrating Hanukkah.
In response, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for a review of the country's already strict gun laws. He stated there is "no place" for firearms in the community.
Mickelson, a well-known American golfer, reacted to this statement online. He suggested that stricter laws disarm law-abiding citizens, leaving them defenseless against criminals who ignore the law.
Australia implemented tough gun control measures in 1996 after a mass shooting. The laws are widely supported within the country. Mickelson's entry into the debate has drawn significant international attention to the discussion.
