Fresh fighting in Ethiopia's Tigray region is raising fears of a wider conflict. Clashes have resumed between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and the national army.
The TPLF is a political party that once led Ethiopia's government. It now controls Tigray, a northern region. The national army answers to Ethiopia's federal government.
Tensions between the two sides have grown for months. A previous war in Tigray, from 2020 to 2022, killed hundreds of thousands of people. A peace deal ended that fighting, but the agreement is now under strain.
If the clashes spread, other regions and armed groups could be drawn in. That could destabilize Ethiopia, Africa's second-most populous country, and affect the wider Horn of Africa.
Diplomats and aid groups are calling for calm. So far, neither side has shown signs of stepping back.
