President Donald Trump has ordered a complete economic blockade on Venezuela's oil exports. The move aims to cut off the primary funding source for President Nicolás Maduro's government.
In a significant policy shift, the U.S. government has also formally designated the Maduro administration as a "Foreign Terrorist Organization." U.S. officials accuse the regime of stealing American assets and engaging in widespread criminal activities.
The new designation imposes severe sanctions on anyone doing business with Venezuelan state entities. It also carries potential criminal penalties for those who provide support.
The actions intensify a long-running campaign to force Maduro from power. The U.S. and dozens of other nations recognize opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela's legitimate president.
Venezuela's economy is already in a deep crisis. This total blockade on its oil industry is expected to place further strain on the country.
