US sends convicted migrants to African kingdom that doesn’t want them

Migrants convicted by US courts have been imprisoned in Eswatini, Africa’s last absolute monarchy, over the past several months. After being deported from the United States, they arrived in a country they knew nothing about. Local residents view these “criminal” newcomers with suspicion. Their sudden journey to the small southern African kingdom comes from a secret deal struck by the Trump administration as part of its mass deportation programme. The deal was investigated by “The Deportation Project”, a collaboration between Forbidden Stories and a network of 72 journalists across 15 countries.
