Israel has refused entry to a group of Canadian lawmakers attempting to visit the West Bank. The delegation, which included several Muslim parliamentarians, was turned away this week.
The Canadian government has formally objected. Officials in Ottawa called Israel's actions "unacceptable" and criticized the "mistreatment" of its citizens.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) also condemned the move. The group labeled the refusal "deeply troubling," suggesting it was discriminatory.
Israel has not provided a detailed public explanation for barring the politicians. The country controls all border crossings into the West Bank.
This incident increases diplomatic friction between the two nations. It follows other recent disputes over policy in the region.
